Civil War Monument - Orange Square Veterans' Park
Port Jervis, New York and Related Area Photographs

Orange Square Veterans Memorial Park.  Formerly the site of brass band concerts, this Civil War monument was dedicated in a epic Monday, July 5, 1886 celebration.  Buried beneath the monument is a modest "time capsule"  that includes an article addressed for the occasion to future generation that had appeared in a Port Jervis newspaper.  According to some, local folklore has it that it was at this location noted American author, Stephen Crane, may have gathered stories from veterans of the Civil War that would later be employed in his most famous novel, "The Red Badge of Courage."
