“STEPHEN CRANE’S POND – Here at the home of his brother Edmund the author of The Red Badge of Courage lived and wrote in the early 1890s.” Text from historical marker.

Located in Sullivan County’s Town of Forestburgh, the pond’s water still spilling over today’s dam once powered a sawmill and served as a source for harvesting ice. Both of those income producing uses were employed by Stephen’s favorite brother, Edmund, who was also an agent of the Port Jervis, Monticello and New York Railroad here at its Hartwood Station. Their brother, Port Jervis attorney, William Crane, and a partner purchased a large tract of property of which this is part and what continues to be the exclusive Hartwood Club. Stephen’s first notable series of newspaper stories took inspiration from this area and are collectively called “Sullivan County Tales and Sketches.”

The states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania meet at this geographic point near the confluence of the Delaware and Neversink Rivers. This site is located off East. Main St. in Port Jervis (U.S. Route 6) by the city’s southeast entrance directly where the bridge crosses the Neversink River. The Tri-State rock memorial is accessed by following along the Neversink through Laurel Grove Cemetery to its southern end near where the I-84 bridge passes overhead. Originally called “Carpenter’s.Point” by which Port Jervis was once known, this landmark is named after the enterprising post-Revolutionary War family who are said to have opened one of the area’s first stores, ran a ferry, and are buried here.  Click link that follows for a 2023 news story about this location.

A Civil War Monument shows a soldier standing atop a tall pillar clutching a flag on a pole in one hand while his other hand rests on the hilt of a sword handing at his waist.

Orange Square Veterans Memorial Park.  Formerly the site of brass band concerts, this Civil War monument was dedicated in a epic Monday July 5, 1886 celebration.  Buried beneath the monument is a modest “time capsule”  that includes an article addressed for the occasion to future generations that had appeared in a Port Jervis newspaper.  While there is no hard proof, according to some, local folklore has it that it was at this location noted American author, Stephen Crane, may have gathered stories from veterans of the Civil War that would later be employed in his most famous novel, “The Red Badge of Courage.”
