One of the greatest gifts with which Port Jervis and its region have been graced is the abundant natural beauty and fresh water it is privileged to enjoy. Besides two nearby National Park Service recreation areas, in Port Jervis this includes its 60 miles of public hiking and biking trails with an adjoining overlook of three states that provides one of the area’s best known vistas. Those wishing to see the monument representing where New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey meet will take a short drive or walk through the over 160 year-old Laurel Grove Cemetery (1856) to near where the Neversink and Delaware Rivers meet.
Along the Delaware River are West End Beach, walking trails and Riverside Park where mountain bike enthusiasts will find a large pump track and others may play a round of disk golf. In addition to being a public playground, Riverside Park is a venue for events staged by community groups and the Port Jervis Tourism Board.
On the opposite side of the railroad tracks that parallel the river here is the downtown commercial area with a mix of professional offices, apartments, specialty shops, restaurants, and a hotel whose construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024. This section of Front Street is also used for community events such as car shows and the touchstone Fall Foliage Festival that has been held since 1993.
Likewise in this area are the rare, operational railroad turntable and a collection of vintage train engines and rolling stock. This property, owned by the City of Port Jervis, is home to The Dining Car Society and Operation Toy Train, which hosts activities and events during the non-winter months. Here, too, is a museum exhibit in a boxcar run by the Tri-States Railway Preservation Society that also seasonally welcomes guests on weekends.
